Wonderful World of Digital Media for Students

Technology has been in our schools for many years now; the first use of technology in schools was to have a computer in the class. We have sense moved way beyond that now. We are incorporating so much technology to enhance the students learning. The assignment for this week was to read chapter 5 Integrating Digital Media and Educational Software Applications. As our textbook states digital media software refers to any computer-based presentation or application software that uses multimedia elements. Allowing users to create new forms of interaction, expression, communication, and entertainment in a digital format. Digital media uses all the elements of multimedia but in a digital format. For the hands on portion of this assignment, we were to create a brief presentation in which you address how digital story telling might benefit your (current or future) students. I did find this a bit difficult, as I am still learning all the facts myself.

I searched many sites for using technology to create this presentation, in the assignment, it suggested PowerPoint, Prezi. I looked at Google Docs, Microsoft Power Point, even downloaded a few that totally frustrated me.

I looked into Photo Story3 where you can create slide shows using your digital photos. With a single click, you can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures. Add stunning special effects, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. Then, personalize them with titles and captions. Small file sizes make it easy to send your photo stories in an e-mail. Watch them on your TV, a computer, or a Windows Mobile–based portable device.

I finally decided to create my story board in Microsoft Power Point, I am not really efficient at power point but feel more comfortable using it.

  1. I also found this assignment a challenge. Having used PowerPoint in a very limited manner, this was a new experience. Just like you mentioned there are so many presentation sources out there that it is almost overwhelming to decide which one to use. I think I need to find one and really learn it, because frankly, how much time do we have to keep learning a new source with all of the other responsibilities.

Just like you have said there are programs that have amazing capabilities. One of the most important things, I guess, is to try to keep up so we can provide authentic and interactive learning. I know exactly what you mean when you speak of frustration. I tend to start looking at several options, almost at once, and then having to almost start from the beginning again.

  2. Hi Sharon-
When I was first asked to d this assignment I immediately thought to do a powerpoint because that was really all I was familar with. I love your presentation that you did and am beginning to think my presentation would have been better if I too used powerpoint. I decided on Prezi and do not regret it, but I just wish it had more options. It doesn't give you the ability to pull clipart, you start out on a blank board that seems intimidating, and I found many gliches. I love powerpoint because there are so many more designs and background choices and it allows for easier input of text. Powerpoint was a good choice and I enjoyed your posting!

  3. I like the concepts you included in your power point: individual learning, group learning, media literacy. You showed multiple styles and applications of learning. Isn't it incredible we have access to all of this technology?

Yes and No. Too many concepts, too little time. I admire your sense of adventure; exploring several options. I try to stick to software I know, because familiarity is best for me. Sometimes I spend more time learning about the software and lose time on the project.I also realize the software I have used, has many capabilities I haven't explored. I work at Valencia and they offer Skill Shops in the Computer Access Lab. I wish I had time to attend.

I haven't used Prezi, but I like Power Point. I have used PhotoStory3 and found it very user friendly. I will probably use it for the next assignment and will definitely use it for the next assignment, if it is allowed.
